The Highlights

Smith Rock State Park

If Central Oregon has a most iconic landmark, it's Smith Rock – a dramatic complex of tufaceous ash columns and volcanic rock rising above a bend in the Crooked River 30 minutes from your door. It's internationally famous among rock climbers (with routes up to 5.14), but equally spectacular as a hiking and photography destination. The Misery Ridge loop (3.5 miles, 1,000 ft elevation gain) delivers one of the most photographed views in Oregon. The valley floor path along the river is accessible and beautiful for all ages.

Go early or late – midday in summer is hot and crowded. Sunrise and golden hour are extraordinary.

Bend

Twenty-five minutes south, Bend has become one of Oregon's defining destinations – a city that takes craft beer, outdoor recreation, and good food equally seriously. Highlights include:

  • Deschutes Brewery – the original taproom is a pilgrimage for beer lovers
  • Old Mill District – riverside shopping, dining, and the Les Schwab Amphitheater where outdoor concerts are a vibe
  • Drake Park & Mirror Pond – a classic Bend afternoon; bring the kids or just a book
  • Bend Whitewater Park – surfable wave on the Deschutes, surrounded by trails
  • The Box Factory & NW Crossing – local shops, specialty coffee, and neighborhood gems

Redmond

Your closest town (10 minutes) has earned its own reputation in recent years – a walkable downtown with good restaurants, a growing craft beverage scene, and a genuine community feel. Don't skip it in favor of Bend for every meal – Redmond's local spots are excellent and far less crowded. Faith, Hope & Charity Vineyards is 10 minutes away and one of Central Oregon's best-kept secrets for wine lovers.

Mt. Bachelor

Oregon's top ski destination sits about 55 minutes west, up the Cascade Lakes Highway. With over 4,300 skiable acres and some of the driest snow in the Northwest, it draws serious skiers and families alike. In summer, the resort opens for mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides.

Sisters

Fifteen minutes northwest, Sisters is one of Oregon's most charming small towns, featuring a Western-facade main street lined with galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops. The Sisters Country is extraordinary cycling and road trip territory and the Sisters Rodeo (June) and Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (July) draw visitors from across the country.

The Deschutes River

The Deschutes runs near Eagle Crest and offers some of Oregon's best fly-fishing (bring your license), kayaking, and rafting. Several outfitters in Bend and Maupin run half-day and full-day rafting trips on the lower river, a highlight of a summer trip. Embark on a canoeing or kayaking adventure with Wanderlust Tours or for a slower pace, rent inner tubes to float the river (rental companies offer free shuttle services from the exit point back to the starting point), or try stand up paddleboarding.

High Desert Museum

Halfway between Redmond and Bend, the High Desert museum is one of the Pacific Northwest's best regional museums, offering living history exhibits, native wildlife habitats, and rotating art and natural history shows. Great for families on a slower day.

Seasonal Notes

Spring (March - May): Wildflowers, uncrowded trails, comfortable temperatures, excellent golf conditions. Occasional rain – pack layers.

Summer (June - September): Peak season, book early.  Warm and dry with 300+ days of sunshine annually. Outdoor pools open.

Fall (October - November): Shoulder season with striking high desert light, emptier trails, stunning colors, and excellent value. Golf is still outstanding through October.

Winter (December - February): Snowfall at the resort is typically rare and light.  Mt. Bachelor is fully operational. The indoor pool and fireplace make staying in feel like a luxury. A genuinely underrated time to visit.
